DIM BULB Rumbling the way to safety

We’ve written about it before: The dangerous Interstate 70 interchange that’s already contributed to the death of one driver. Residents are up in arms over the interchange, which they say is a death trap. They want it shut down while a permanent solution is reached. So how do they fix it? Rumble strips. And warning signs. Because a little extra noise is going to prevent a merging nightmare and an accident. That’s not enough. They need a permanent solution before someone else dies. And in the meantime, they need to shut the interchange down.

OUTRAGE: Let’s get physical

  • Who: Baltimore City Police, Anne Arundel Police and Baltimore County Police.
  • What: The departments do not currently require mid-career physicals for its officers, and Baltimore County only requires them at age 60.
  • Why it’s a bad idea: The state is beginning to see why this is a big deal in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, where mid-career physicals aren’t required and the rate of disability payouts is soaring. No one wants an officer with high blood pressure having a heart attack while trying to run down a purse-snatcher. And no one wants one who can’t run at all on patrol duty. We need to make sure that these men and women who were fit and trim when they left the academy have an incentive to stay that way and not follow America’s couch potato trend. Best way is to require physicals to be eligible for disability.
  • Why they are doing it: Maybe it never seemed necessary before, but we’re seeing that it could be a huge problem.

Quote of the day
“As long as our judges and lawyers are only interested in putting dangerous people back on the streets, violence will continue.”
