WHO: Parking violators

WHAT:  With the help of cell phones and color printers non residents in some of Baltimore’s busiest neighborhoods are counterfeiting resident parking permits. Others steal permits for their use and still others sell their permits illegally after moving to a different neighborhood.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: These scofflaws are causing parking nightmares in already packed Baltimore City neighborhoods including Federal Hill and Mt. Vernon. But violators better watch out. The City Council is considering legislation to fine violators with an immediate $500 ticket.

WHERE TO VENT: Contact Baltimore City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke (D-14) and Councilman William Cole (D-11), the sponsors of the legislation to strengthen permit laws at 410-396-4814 (Clarke) or  410-396-4816 (Cole).

Today’s bright bulb: Not quite so desperate times

Bank robberies are down throughout the region this year according to a recent FBI report. Robberies usually tick up in tough times. So either crack police work leading to 80 percent of offenders being caught is deterring would be criminals — or robbers have no confidence, like the markets, that banks are good for cash.
