San Francisco’s sanctuary laws

WHO: Edwin Ramos, a 21-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador

WHAT: A reputed member of the MS-13 gang, Ramos is accused of killing 48-year-old Anthony Bologna of San Francisco and his two sons, Michael, 20 and Matthew, 16, with an AK-47 assault rifle as they were driving home from a family picnic on June 22.

HOW: Ramos had been arrested three times before, including in late March when police found a gun in the car he was driving that had been used in a double homicide the day before. But San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris refused to file charges, and Ramos walked out of jail a free man. Thanks to the city’s sanctuary laws, which shield even violent felons from deportation, Ramos remained on the streets despite two prior convictions for assault and attempted robbery.

VENT: San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom: (415) 554-7111
