Lieberman calls on more Democrats to support school choice

Former Sen. Joe Lieberman called on more Democrats to support school choice Tuesday.

“Frankly, there are too few Democratic leaders in Washington speaking out for school choice,” Lieberman said at the American Federation for Children’s National Policy Summit. “This is not right. This … is not a partisan issue, this is really an American issue.”

Lieberman said more and more Democrats at the state level are supporting school choice.

Lieberman’s critique of Democrats in general was preceded by praise for Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., for his support of school choice. Booker is an avid supporter of Washington, D.C.’s Opportunity Scholarship Program, which gives low-income students a scholarship for tuition at the private school of their choice. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., is also a Democratic supporter of the program.

Lieberman was a Democrat for most of his senate career before he lost a Democratic primary in 2006 and then won re-election instead as an independent. He continued to caucuse with Senate Democrats after that. He was also the Democratic nominee for vice president on Al Gore’s ticket in 2000.
