What: The supermarket chain punished one of its butchers in California who intervened to stop a customer from hitting his pregnant girlfriend, suspending the employee without pay.
Why it’s dim: Once again, no good deed goes unpunished. If the managers of Safeway need an explanation for why this is dim, they should be summarily fired.
Cure: Adopt this rule in retail: The customer isn’t right if he’s beating up his pregnant girlfriend.
