The “Green New Deal” earned the endorsement of dozens of Democratic lawmakers, including nearly every senator running for president. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., swears it’s the only thing that can save the world from ending “in, like, 12 years,” and the rest of the party’s rising stars have fallen in line to back the resolution.
The “GND’s” official proposals include “guaranteeing a job with a family sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States,” “upgrading all existing buildings in the United States,” banning all nonrenewable energy including nuclear power, national high-speed rail, and “ensur[ing] that the public receives appropriate ownership stakes and returns on investment, adequate capital (including through community grants, public banks, and other public financing).” These statist measures will supposedly bring the nation to carbon neutrality within the decade.
Well, if the Democrats want the “GND,” then Cocaine Mitch will let them have it. Amid all the bad press it’s gotten, the Senate majority leader from Kentucky has announced that he is bringing the resolution to the Senate floor for a formal vote.
“We’ll give everyone an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the ‘Green New Deal,'” said Sen. McConnell, R-Ky.
It’s only fair. More than 60 House Democrats have co-sponsored the bill, and of the 11 senators who have co-sponsored it, five are running for president — six if you count Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
The Left has spent the past week moaning about mainstream coverage of the resolution and its moronically botched rollout, which included an FAQ section promising money for those “unwilling to work” and the eventual abolition of air travel and “farting cows.” Republicans pounced or seized, depending on whom you ask, on the resolution that would require tens of trillions of dollars of taxpayer money.
The media have charged us with not taking the resolution seriously and mocking its backers. So as the McConnell Senate Committee account tweeted, “we’re going to vote in the Senate and and see how many Democrats want to end air travel and cow farts.”
If it’s going to save the world as Democrats say it will, then they will have the chance to prove that the “Green New Deal” is more than just a campaign slogan.
