WHO: The National Science Foundation
WHAT: Mont Hubbard and Ron Hess, professors in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California at Davis, have been awarded a two-year, $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The grant will be used to study exactly how humans ride bikes. According to Hubbard, “There’s a lot of folklore and experience, but we don’t have a precise scientific understanding of how humans control bicycles.” Is there not another, more strategic area of study toward which NSF could direct funding? Cancer research, maybe?
WHERE TO VENT: Call the NSF at 703-292-5111.
