Politicians in Washington, D.C., are experiencing a sudden rash of xenophobia. Incensed by the arrival of hundreds of illegal immigrants, they are now complaining that the governors of Texas and Arizona, who offered those immigrants a free ride to Washington, have turned their cities into border towns.
Welcome to the border crisis, Washington — this is what your sanctuary city signed up for.
Like most Democratic officials in the city, Councilwoman Brianne Nadeau has boasted about Washington, D.C., being a sanctuary city. But that was back when being a sanctuary city was just a convenient form of virtue-signaling, letting other white liberals know that you are tolerant and inclusive. Now that there are actual consequences to being a sanctuary city, it’s a problem. Texas and Arizona are helping illegal immigrants reach her city — they are usually glad to take the free ride — and now, surprise surprise, the white liberals are much less accepting.
The District is a sanctuary city, which means our law enforcement does not cooperate with ICE. As Councilmember, I have called for an abolition of ICE and wrote DC’s law to establish a permanent immigrant legal services fund.

“The governors of Texas and Arizona have created this crisis,” Nadeau said. “We’ve learned from border towns, like El Paso and Brownsville, and in many ways, the governors of Texas and Arizona have turned us into a border town.”
Yes, congratulations on understanding the point of this entire exercise.
Nadeau’s whining, as well as Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser’s declaration of a humanitarian crisis, makes for a laughable situation. Washington, D.C., has a population of 700,000 and has seen about 9,400 migrants sent from the border over the last few months. In comparison, the town of Eagle Pass, Texas, has a population of 30,000 and sees 10,000 migrants in one week. In July 2022 alone, there were just under 200,000 illegal immigrants encountered at the border.
That is what actual border towns are facing — a real crisis that makes Washingtonians’ whining look like a joke. Those towns do not have the resources to handle these numbers, nor did they sign up for it. Washington, D.C., on the other hand, is a self-proclaimed sanctuary city run by Democrats who support the Biden administration’s open-border policies. Texas and Arizona did not “create” any crisis. They just brought President Joe Biden’s border crisis to his own doorstep.
Nadeau is happy to invite illegal immigrants to her city, as are most Democrats — as long as they don’t actually show up. They just want illegal border-crossers to overwhelm border towns in Texas and Arizona so that they can shame conservatives in those states for not being as tolerant and welcoming as they are.
Nadeau wants illegal immigrants to know that they are welcome in your backyard, just not in hers.
