Trump ‘disappointed’ with farm bill’s failure in the House

President Trump was “disappointed” by the House of Representatives on Friday for rejecting an $867 billion farm bill after several conservative lawmakers came out against the legislation, the White House said in a statement.

The legislation failed 198-213 earlier Friday with not a single Democrat supporting it, and 30 Republicans voting “no.” Members of the House Freedom Caucus voted against the measure after GOP leaders refused to guarantee a future vote on a series of hard-line immigration bills in exchange for their support.

“[Trump] hopes the House can resolve any remaining issues in order to achieve strong work requirements and support our Nation’s agricultural community,” said White House deputy press secretary Lindsey Walters. “The Administration underscores the need to bring certainty to our farmers and ranchers and to the many Americans receiving food assistance, and will continue to work with Congress to pass a Farm bill on time.”

House GOP leaders are weighing their options as they look to bring the bill back up for consideration, knowing that certain concessions to the Freedom Caucus could jeopardize moderate Republican support for the farm legislation.
