Editorial: Baltimore County Council members deserve ?A? for attendance

Baltimore County Council Members show up for work. Newly elected chairman Sam Moxley, (D-District 1) a council member for 12 years, has missed eight meetings out of 279, for a 97.13 percent attendance record.

And his is the worst attendance record of them all. Sixth District Council Member Joe Bartenfelder, a Democrat, has missed only one meeting in 12 years.

One. Democratic District 2 Council Member Kevin Kamenetz missed four meetings in 12 years; Bryan McIntire (R-District 3) missed two meetings in 12 years; Vince Gardina (D-District 5) missed nine meetings in 16 years and John Olszewski Sr. (D-District 7) missed three meetings in eight years. Remember, these men all hold outside jobs.

That?s a lot better than most congressional records. Any member of Congress who missed work this year has little excuse since members met only 103 days ? or about 50 days fewer than most years, making it unlikely any broke a sweat. By comparison, We the People who get two weeks of vacation a year have to show up for the daily grind 250 days ? working five months of that just to pay taxes.

Of course, competent representation is more important than attendance. But we appreciate that Baltimore County Council members care about their duties at least enough to come to work.
