The Daily Outrage: Subsidizing the high costs of high art

Who: National Endowment for the Arts

What: Spent more than $1.7 million in federal money on ballet subsidies in 2010.

Why it’s an outrage: The 55 subsidies, which ranged from $10,000 to $150,000, went to ballet, one of the least attended performance art events in the country, according to a 2002 Princeton study. Only 3.9 percent of adults reported attending a ballet performance during a 12-month period. This is how taxpayer money is spent in a recession?
