Reminder: Abortions are tax deductible

Despite continued polling showing that Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to taxpayer funding for abortions, the procedure can still be included as part of deductible medical expenses under certain circumstances.

From the IRS: “You can include in medical expenses the amount you pay for a legal abortion.”

Now, it’s not a cut-and-dry situation where you can just have an abortion and have the government pay for it. It’s a bit more nuanced than that.

A person can deduct medical expenses that are more than 10 percent of Adjusted Gross Income, or 7.5 percent of AGI if you were born before Jan. 2, 1950. The example the IRS gives is of an unmarried person born after that day with an AGI of $40,000. They would be able to deduct expenses over 10 percent of their AGI, which is $4,000. But if their medical expenses amounted to less than $4,000, then no deduction is available.

Included in the list of medical expenses that can be deducted once 10 percent of AGI has been met are abortions, acupuncture, birth control, Christian Science practitioner fees, pregnancy kits, vasectomies and a whole lot more.
