Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) is still downplaying the issue of crime, even as she is on the verge of losing her race over the matter.
During the debate in the governor’s race between Hochul and Rep. Lee Zeldin, Hochul dismissed the issue of crime, saying that “anyone who commits a crime under our laws, especially with the change we made to bail, has consequences” and that she doesn’t know why the issue is “so important” to Zeldin.
DEMOCRATS’ VERY BAD DEBATE NIGHT
Perhaps it is important to Zeldin because a man attempted to stab him at a campaign event and was let out of jail within hours or because a gunman shot two people just outside his home while his two daughters were home alone. Or perhaps it is because stabbings, thefts, robberies, assaults, and rape are all up in New York City compared to last year, and shootings are up in areas of the state outside of the Big Apple as well.
Hochul, who pretends to care about crime in campaign ads, didn’t want to touch the issue in a debate. That’s because she knows Democrats have emboldened criminals with the state’s bail reform law. She can avoid that reality in brief television ads, but when pushed in real life, she has nowhere to dodge.
Hochul has tried to argue that she is tough on crime because she loves gun control. But she also said she doesn’t need silly things like “proof” or “evidence” that restricting law-abiding gun owners would have an effect on repeat criminals continuing to shoot or shoot at people on the street. Hochul doesn’t have, or want to find, real solutions to address crime in New York. She claimed in the debate that reforms to the bail law were enough, but Democrats have already tried to fix the unfixable law — twice. Everyone, including especially the voters, knows that letting repeat criminals out over and over again on their honor (i.e., no cash for bail) is a recipe for disaster.
Anne: Do you have numbers to show that it’s the concealed carry permit holders that are committing crimes?
Hochul: I don’t need to have numbers. I don’t need to have a data point to say this. I know that I have a responsibility for this state to have sensible gun safety laws. pic.twitter.com/NiCp7POO88

Of course, Hochul doesn’t care. She said of Zeldin and, by extension, anyone concerned about crime that they should “just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong.” You want to walk down the street without being shot or mugged? Kathy Hochul’s New York just isn’t the place for you.

If Hochul loses, it will be because of her nonchalant attitude toward people being assaulted in the streets. But if she wins, New Yorkers will have sent a message that they don’t care about crime, and New York Democrats will reembrace with a vengeance the soft-on-crime policies that have put everyday residents in danger.
Hochul is betting that voters will give her a pass and a green light to continue those policies. It will be their choice if they want to prove her wrong.
