Sen. Richard Blumenthal inadvertently offered the best evidence to date that Democrats care nothing at all about the truth of the sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh and more about defeating his Supreme Court nomination by any means.
The Connecticut Democrat didn’t just ask that the confirmation process be delayed Tuesday afternoon. Blumenthal said the nomination “should be withdrawn.”
“This nomination will not only cast a shadow over Judge Kavanaugh if he ever were to be confirmed,” Blumenthal said at a Capitol Hill press conference, “it will also stain the United States Supreme Court irreparably.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court “should be withdrawn”

Naturally, Blumenthal has no idea whether any of the allegations are true. So far, neither Kavanaugh nor his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, have testified under oath. Details are unconfirmed. Questions remain. No one knows the truth, which is why is precisely why it is so ridiculous for Blumenthal to call for Kavanaugh to quit over an allegation that, while disturbing, hasn’t been proven.
Essentially Blumenthal is saying that Kavanaugh should withdraw himself from consideration before even defending himself. That would be a good idea if he just wanted to ruin his own reputation forever, irreparably, guilty or innocent.
More disturbing, Blumenthal is saying that an unproven accusation should be enough to end anyone’s career, due process be damned — at least if it’s a Republican official we’re talking about.
And it seems like this may be the closed-door consensus among Democrats. Standing next to Blumenthal, Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii., volunteered that “we would be delighted if he withdrew his nomination.”
One wonders whether Democrats even care about Ford or whether they are just eager to use an alleged victim of sexual assault to win a victory by any means.
