Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for Florida governor in 2022, just went Hitler on everybody.
To be specific, she just said she witnessed the rise of Hitler, even though she was born more than 30 years after he died.
On Friday’s episode of The Florida Roundup, NPR aired a previously recorded interview with Fried in which she was heavily critical of Ron DeSantis. She described DeSantis as authoritarian and proceeded to make the inevitably awful Hitler comparison, saying she “saw the rise of Hitler.”
The comment comes just a little less than three and a half minutes into the interview.
“He is doing everything possible to take power away from local governments, taking away people’s abilities to protest, making it harder to vote, talking about, you know, banning books,” Fried said. “That’s what dictators do. Instead of listening and trying to govern with the people, he is trying to govern over the people, and, you know, that, I’m sorry, I’m a student of history, too. I saw the rise of Hitler.”
Fried is probably not familiar with Godwin’s law, or else she would have avoided this over-the-top, absurd comparison. Moreover, Fried justified her comments by proclaiming she was “a student of history.” Sorry, but no student of history would compare DeSantis to Hitler. Fried should seek a refund on her college tuition.
Also, if you wonder why Democrats perform so badly in Florida, an evenly divided state for decades, there you have your answer. Democrats really know how to pick their candidates. Between Fried and Andrew Gillum, the former Democratic Florida gubernatorial candidate found in a hotel room intoxicated and passed out with a male escort, we now have the 44-year-old Hitler-watcher probably leading their ticket this fall.
Love or hate DeSantis, any comparisons between him and Hitler are just disgraceful. There is no similarity between him or any U.S. politician and Hitler. Any people who make such claims should be laughed out of whatever room they are in.
She then claimed DeSantis wants his “own militia” and used that to further the Hitler comparisons. Fried was referring to DeSantis’s ambition to relaunch the Florida State Guard to assist the Florida National Guard during state emergencies. This is not a militia but a civilian corps similar to the ones in California and Maryland. State guards in those and other states have been doing valuable volunteer work, helping to distribute medicines and vaccinations during the pandemic.
Fried hilariously went on to say that DeSantis is doing all of these things to “make fear.”
Ah, those politicians and their fearmongering! What will DeSantis do next to spread fear? Compare his opponent to Hitler?
