The topic of wearing masks as a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the coronavirus has been a divisive issue almost since it was first recommended in the spring of 2020. Nearly two years later, it remains a contentious issue. From the convoluted recommendations of so-called experts, the various studies that contradict each other, and the seemingly ever-changing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s difficult to believe anything regarding the efficacy of masks.
Despite this, it has not stopped the comedians on Saturday Night Live from partaking in some puzzling propaganda about wearing masks.
At the conclusion of each 90-minute episode, the entire cast (along with the show’s host for the week) appears onstage announcing its gratitude and how fun the experience has been before the end credits roll. However, when they do this, everyone is seen wearing masks. This is odd, because during the previous 89 minutes of the production, no one wears a mask at all. It’s as if comedy is a cure for COVID-19. As soon as the humor stops, the entertainers are vulnerable again and must mask up to stop the spread.
Despite the controversy surrounding the effectiveness of wearing masks, if a show wants to advocate wearing masks during the pandemic, more power to them. That is certainly their right. It just makes absolutely no sense not to wear masks during the entire episode and then don them at the very end. How does only wearing masks at the end of the episode benefit anyone? If they are so concerned about spreading the coronavirus, shouldn’t they be wearing masks for the entire episode?
One would assume that they do not wear masks during the entire episode because it would affect the quality of the show’s production on live television — either from the optics of entertainers wearing masks during their performances or the audio problems with muffled sounds when they speak. Yet, if COVID-19 is such a threat, why are they prioritizing entertainment value over safety?
The answer, of course, is it’s not a threat. There are ulterior motives at work. And given the sanctimonious lecturing by many on the Left, this might be the preeminent example of virtue signaling when it comes to mask-wearing. It’s nothing more than propaganda, indicative of why there is such a divide on the issue.
