DOT’s Chao on her ‘American Dream,’ McConnell’s ‘graveyard,’ new Fallen Journalists Memorial

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao opened up about her Chinese parents and early life as an immigrant child in the United States in speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference and strategy briefing.

She said that when they arrived in the U.S., they knew little about the country and spoke no English, but she said their faith helped them in the early days.

“Our initial years in America were challenging. We didn’t speak English or understand the culture. There were no family members or friends to offer support,” she said.

“But we were lucky to have our church and the friendship of former Christian missionaries, who taught us English and helped our family understand this country and build a new life here,” she said, adding, “My family are patriotic Americans who have led purpose-driven lives and contributed much to this country. They embody the American dream. And my parents inspired all their daughters to give back to this country.” …

  • A new group has been created to build a permanent Fallen Journalists Memorial in Washington. The Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation will operate out of the National Press Club and raise money for the memorial. Congress is working on legislation to let it raise money. …

The liberal EMILY’s List has featured him in fundraisers, the Democratic group American Bridge 21st Century has capitalized on his dubbing himself “the Grim Reaper,” and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been distributing a graphic of “McConnell’s Graveyard,” showing legislation on tombstones. Asked for his reaction, an insider said, “Mitch McConnell loves this stuff from the Democrats.” …
  • Facebook has signed up to sponsor the second annual Resurgent Gathering, hosted by Erick Erickson, in Atlanta Aug.1-4. It also sponsored the libertarian LibertyCon, dispelling concerns it was favoring only liberal conferences. …
