The looming 2020 staffer shortage

LinkedIn is Facebook for unemployed people — and apparently the first place Tom Steyer looks for talent to staff a potential 2020 presidential run.

The progressive billionaire anonymously posted several job listing on the website for several high-ranking positions. A Steyer spokeswoman confirmed to BuzzFeed News that her boss “is considering how he can have the most impact in 2020, and our team is exploring staffing options, should he decide to move forward with a run.”

If Steyer throws his hat in the ring, he will need to upgrade in the digital arena. Using LinkedIn is a remarkably unsavvy way to attract talent. A well-connected moneybags like Steyer shouldn’t be putting help-wanted signs on the street corners of the Internet.

That is the easy analysis, and it is true. But there is something else at play: A looming staffer shortage.

It’s going to be a crowded primary field. The co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, predicts “between 30 and 40 great candidates running for president.” And that means that good help will be hard to find.
