Bright Bulb: A true leadership academy

Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler says he’s working to make his midshipmen the hardest-working team in Division I, and we applaud that. Too many schools allow athletes more privileges, more leeway — more everything than the rest of their students.

OUTRAGE:

Artless dodgers

  • Who: The Maryland State Police
  • What: The state police are attempting to dodge a lawsuit filed against them by the American Civil Liberties Union over documents relating to their attempts to spy on Maryland activists.
  • Why it’s a bad idea: If everything is on the up and up, why are the state police trying so hard to avoid turning out their documents? If they really released all the documents (doubtful), their word isn’t enough. They already spied on our citizens, for pete’s sake. Let’s get some answers.
  • Why they’re doing it: Our guess is that they’re trying to save face. That or hiding public information is too hard a habit to kick. You pick.
  • Where to vent: mdsp.org

Quote of the day

“One of the biggest things I’ve learned over last four years is that anything’s possible. I’ve had some pretty lofty dreams in my head. Those dreams and those goals are going to stay until they’re accomplished.”

– Michael Phelps, speaking in London about his record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and his hopes for the London Olympics in 2012.
