What: The “Today” show broadcast a 911 call from George Zimmerman in which Zimmerman described Trayvon Martin as “suspicious,” while seeming to offer only one reason for that suspicion: “He looks black.” Why it’s dim: The 911 tape broadcast on NBC had been edited. On the original tape, Zimmerman explains that Martin seems suspicious because he is walking around in the rain. He only mentions Martin’s race after the 911 dispatcher asked if Martin was “black, white or Hispanic?”
Cure: An investigation of Zimmerman’s shooting of Martin will provide whatever evidence there is against Zimmerman. But is it the media’s place to doctor evidence to make him seem guilty of a hate crime?
