A wave of bomb threats leveled at Jewish community centers Monday compelled Ivanka Trump to offer her support, tweeting, “America is a nation built on the principle of religious tolerance. We must protect our houses of worship & religious centers.”
Unsurprisingly, her message of tolerance was greeted with intolerance from detractors.
Trump, who converted to Judaism before marrying Jared Kushner, was charged with being disingenuous, hit for supporting her father, and even blamed for the threats.
Reactions from Twitter users were so bitter, they prompted The Huffington Post to headline their story, “Ivanka Trump Tweeted About Religious Tolerance. It Didn’t Go Down Well.”
Many on the Left rightfully spent Monday challenging the White House to condemn the threats. But the very people so troubled by the intolerance threatening Jewish community centers then reacted to a statement of support for their cause by directing intolerance toward a Jewish woman.
Since the election of President Trump, liberals have lectured endlessly on the importance of civility, respect, and dialogue. Many people are so blinded by their hatred of Donald Trump that they fail to recognize, or work to actively justify, their own intolerance.
If the Left is sincerely interested in restoring civility and respect to politics, liberals must acknowledge their own failures instead of reflexively lashing out at well-intentioned people of faith.
