The gross identitarian pandering of the Democratic Party has become so widespread that it is often greeted with a shrug. But this anti-American view of politics and the world should not be accepted or normalized. President Joe Biden should be ashamed for promoting it.
When discussing the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Biden said he had “made no decision but one,” and that was he would only pick a black woman. This was a promise Biden made during the campaign. He would not indicate any candidate or provide a list to the public — the only qualifications that mattered were gender and skin color.
There are certainly qualified black women whom Biden could nominate, but that is not the point. Biden is not picking a black woman he thinks would be the best nominee for the job. He announced in advance he would pick one as a token, so he could say he placed the first black woman on the Supreme Court.

This is exactly what Biden did when he picked Kamala Harris as his running mate. Biden explicitly said he was only going to pick a woman. That idea of choosing a token woman ended up morphing into picking a token black woman after the death of George Floyd brought back liberal focus on Black Lives Matter.
Biden also did this with his Cabinet. California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna said race “should be a factor” when supporting or opposing Biden’s nominees. Racial lobbying groups tried to force Biden to pick as many members of their racial group for his Cabinet as possible, always insisting Biden hadn’t picked enough, regardless of the position or his previous nominees.
This worldview defies everything we are supposed to aspire to as a country. Biden, along with the Democratic Party and cultural institutions, divides and categorizes people based entirely on unchangeable characteristics. To them, the accomplishments or personalities of individuals are irrelevant. Everyone can be neatly categorized based on skin color and gender, and those are the only things about them that matter.

Whomever Biden picks for positions like this should be evaluated on their own merits. But it must be reiterated that Biden himself is not doing that. Racial and gender quotas are the opposite of progress. They only serve to divide the country further while stripping away any sense of accomplishment from the disadvantaged groups being favored.
