If you think CNN learned its lesson from the Michael Avenatti fiasco, you do not know CNN.
The “facts first” network is promoting yet another attention-seeking idiot of a lawyer, ignoring all the while the obvious red flags that suggest this will end in shame and embarrassment for everyone involved.
“A Florida man visiting beaches dressed as the Grim Reaper says governor should require masks statewide,” reads the title to a gushing CNN report on attorney Daniel Uhlfelder, who, as the headline says, enjoys patrolling Florida’s beaches dressed like a dimwit so he can yell at unsuspecting visitors for being outdoors.
Notably absent from the CNN article is any mention of the fact that Uhlfelder recently participated in a “huge” George Floyd protest. That seems to be a pretty relevant fact to omit from a story about an outdoor social distancing scold.
“A Florida lawyer who visits the state’s reopened beaches dressed as death itself is calling on Gov. Ron DeSantis to require the public to wear masks,” the report begins.
It adds, “Daniel Uhlfelder, who sued the state’s Republican governor earlier this year saying he prematurely opened beaches, has spent the last several weeks warning beachgoers of the coronavirus’s rising danger while dressed as the Grim Reaper — complete with a dark cloak and a giant scythe.”
Again, Uhlfelder, who is suing DeSantis for “prematurely opening the beaches” where Uhlfelder enjoys berating total strangers, recently threw himself into a crowded, sweaty, George Floyd protest. That CNN did not think this social distancing double-standard worth mentioning in its coverage of the attorney’s tiresome Grim Reaper shtick is – telling.
“Unfortunately, when I started this work in March, I had a bad belief that this was going to get really bad,” said the shameless fame-seeker. “Unfortunately, my predictions have exceeded what I thought.”
The CNN report continues, claiming Uhlfelder polices the beaches because he believes they are “drawing people into the state from around the world, which is in part resulting in increased case numbers.”
The article adds, “Since the beginning of his tour on May 1, Uhlfelder has traveled to beaches from Miami to Jacksonville, receiving at least some push back from beachgoers.”
But never fear, the story continues, the pushback from reasonably annoyed people will not deter Uhlfelder from carrying out his duties as the self-appointed Grand Poobah of busybodies. Indeed, he told CNN, he hopes he can continue to act as “a voice for the people of Florida.” A grateful nation thanks you for your service, you selfless martyr.
“It’s not necessarily the act of being on the beach,” Uhlfelder said. “They’re getting fresh air, they’re exercising, and I don’t have a problem with that type of conduct. It’s the fact that people come to Florida to come to use our beaches.”
He added, “We don’t have a comprehensive state plan to deal with [an influx of out-of-state visitors]. The governor has decided to defer to the local areas, like cities and counties, to make the decisions, which are tough decisions.”
Elsewhere, on social media, CNN reported of its favorite new activist attorney: “Attorney Daniel Uhlfelder, who dresses as the Grim Reaper to warn beachgoers to stay home, has sued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for prematurely opening beaches amid the coronavirus pandemic. He says ‘there’s been a lack of leadership’ in the state. ”

We will conclude here by showing you what CNN declined to include in its glowing coverage of Uhlfelder’s anti-reopening campaign. The following is a June 7 tweet from the attorney’s own social media account, showing him participating in a protest against the wrongful death of Floyd. By Uhlfelder’s own admission, it was a “huge crowd,” and his own picture has them packed a lot more tightly than anyone at the beach.

Uhlfelder may not end up being a crook like Avenatti, but his dopey, self-serving, clearly unserious, anti-reopening gimmick, which will only get dumber and more extreme as the novelty wears off, will nevertheless leave CNN looking the fool for having promoted him in the first place.
