Trump’s “100 Days” ad is now getting much more attention than it probably would have otherwise, simply because several the networks have refused to air this Trump presidential campaign ad (yes, we already have presidential campaign ads) because it overtly characterizes their anchors as purveyors of “fake news.”
Whatever the wisdom of that decision, I’m a lot more curious about this self-aggrandizing genre of ad running so far away from the next election. You just don’t see that much paid advertising for “Wow, ain’t he doing great?” in April or May after an elected official takes office. I’d assume that’s because it doesn’t work. Then again, maybe it’s just because people have assumed it doesn’t work.
Before Trump won, I probably would have just pointed out that this ad feels something like what you might see on North Korean state television, which it does. But now? Well, I kind of wonder whether we aren’t going to start seeing other candidates do the same thing. Which would be pretty annoying.
