Tuesday was a sad day of political stupidity

Even by 2018 standards, Tuesday was a day of particular stupidity in political discourse.

Take President Trump’s rally in Tampa, Fla. A Venus flytrap for the president’s less-sane supporters, CNN’s Jim Acosta was subjected to screaming insults as he reported on Trump’s address. The footage of screaming people (including one fanatic brandishing Seth Rich conspiracy signs) was not conducive to the presentation of conservative intellect.

Next up, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., decided that securing the House speakership required his stupidity on Twitter. McCarthy tweeted that a moronic Democratic candidate for the House be banned from the social media platform for insulting the first lady.

As my colleague Emily Jashinsky points out, McCarthy’s call is silly populism veiled as moral courage.

But what of the Left’s idiocy yesterday?

Well, obviously leading the pack here was the guy who said that Melania Trump is a prostitute. But not far behind was the CNN guest who had a rather original response to a conservative debate opponent. Challenged with the idea that 3D gun blueprints are protected materials under the First Amendment, Brian Claypool told his debate opponent, “You go dodge bullets.”

Thanks, Brian.

Not to be outdone was Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, who, viewing the Trump rally rancor, claimed that only conservatism has nutters. Schatz has apparently forgotten about antifa and the far-left’s penchant for actively obstructing conservative speakers.

Ultimately, Tuesday was not an auspicious day in the life of the world’s greatest democracy.
