Potential Nancy Pelosi challenger Marcia Fudge backed impeachment of Trump

Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, who is weighing a possible challenge to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as speaker of the incoming Democratic House, has previously supported the impeachment of President Trump.

Last November, Fudge joined with a group of Democrats in filing articles of impeachment against Trump as part of a resolution introduced in the House and called him a “clear and present danger to our democracy.”

Fudge is one of 17 Democrats who have publicly said they would oppose Pelosi’s elevation to speaker on the House floor, which would likely be enough to tank her candidacy should they stick to it. But as of now, there is no formal challenger to Pelosi.

The possibility of impeaching Trump is one looming question facing the incoming House majority.

A survey by Monmouth University released Wednesday found that just 36 percent of Americans believe that Trump should be impeached and removed from office, compared with 59 percent who oppose the idea. Particularly tricky for the incoming leader is that impeachment is supported by 70 percent of self-identified Democrats while being opposed by 67 percent of independents.
