While opponent slams Claire McCaskill for taking Hollywood’s money, Hollywood heavyweights plan fundraiser on her behalf

When Sen. Claire McCaskill’s, D-Mo., likely Republican opponent, state Attorney General Josh Hawley, launched his campaign earlier this month, he built his case against her by arguing she represented the interests of faraway elites in Washington, Wall Street, and Hollywood.

“Hollywood and Wall Street and the DC political establishment have worked together to rig a system that favors them, the wealthy and well-connected, while ignoring the rest of us,” said Hawley on March 13. “And Claire McCaskill is their eager ally.”

In fact, for a campaign launch in a political primary, Hollywood came up a lot in Hawley’s remarks. The word itself was mentioned five times, twice of which involved McCaskill’s financial relationship with the industry. Hawley accused McCaskill of being “one of the top takers of money from Hollywood” and predicted that throughout the campaign she would “take Hollywood’s money … and do their dirty work.”

Fast forward two weeks, and McCaskill is headed west to collect some campaign cash.

According to an invitation obtained by Politico, “Los Angeles-area heavyweights” including director Steven Spielberg, former DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, and actress Katie McGrath are set to host a May 6 fundraiser for McCaskill in Beverly Hills. Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to appear as a special guest as well.

The event, per Politico’s report, is being paid for by McCaskill 2018 Victory, the joint fundraising committee between the senator, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and the Missouri Democratic State Committee.

Needless to say, this is a gathering that won’t go unnoticed by Hawley, whose central argument against McCaskill just got a boost from the senator herself.
