For Haiku Poetry Day, one for each top 2020 candidate

If only a presidential platform could be as simple as a haiku.

Almost two dozen candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination to take on President Trump in 2020, and with such a crowded field, it would be nice to strip away the noise.

A haiku, a traditional Japanese poem, has three verses of five, seven, then five syllables. It’s traditionally used to describe nature, to distill a grand feeling into a single moment.

On Haiku Poetry Day, the poetic form might help in distinguishing all of the presidential candidates. To that end, I’ve written poems for several Democratic front-runners:

Bernie Sanders

Medicare for all,

Fine justice for the nation

With others’ money.

Joe Biden

Cherry blossoms bloom,

Sweetly scented, but they smell

Not as good as hair.

Kamala Harris

Legalizing pot

Makes a cool prosecutor,

Am I right, Tupac?

Cory Booker

Aspirations of

Spartacus less appealing

Than veganism.

Elizabeth Warren

Nevertheless, she

Persisted as senator,

Not Pocahontas.

Beto O’Rourke

Comeback kid, behind

Sweaty shirts and TV love

It’s a rich, white dude.
