Perez claimed 180 votes for DNC chair — The Hill’s survey casts doubt on that

This weekend, the 447 members of the Democratic National Committee will choose a new DNC chairman. Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, the Obama-Biden candidate for the position, has claimed to have backing from 180 of them already. That puts him very close to the 224 he needs to clinch.

But today, The Hill came out with a survey of 220 of the DNC’s 447 voting members. The result? Ellison has a commanding lead within their sample: 105 to just 57 for Perez, and 50 undecided.

It’s possible that The Hill’s survey slants toward…well, the Hill — Capitol Hill, where Ellison’s support is strongest. Or maybe all or nearly all of the undecideds are really Perez supporters.

But the chances of surveying nearly half of the electors and coming up with a result like this one seems pretty slim if Perez has 180 commitments. No, it’s not mathematically impossible, but they would have to have missed nearly all of Perez’s supporters.
