Amy McGrath draws another primary challenger

Democratic Kentucky Senate candidate Amy McGrath’s quixotic quest to unseat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just got a little more unrealistic.

Democrat Mike Broihier announced this week that he will also run against the Kentucky Republican in the coming election.

“We deserve a U.S. senator who sees beyond the labels, who actually cares about us, who listens to us, who sees us and respects us as individuals,” the retired Marine lieutenant colonel said in a video announcing his candidacy. “Mitch McConnell doesn’t.”

Broihier’s announcement comes after Democrats in the Bluegrass State, including Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Kentucky, have encouraged additional members of their party to jump into the race to unseat McConnell.

“I think you have to sharpen your skills to the highest level to take on Mitch, so a primary would be helpful,” Kentucky’s sole Democratic representative told the Washington Post.

That Yarmuth said this after McGrath announced her 2020 candidacy is the important detail.

Just hours after announcing her candidacy, McGrath bombed in a CNN interview wherein she was asked to explain her 2017 comparison between the election of President Trump and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which killed thousands of Americans. Later, she flip-flopped on whether she would have voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. She ultimately ended the week of her campaign launch by cancelling an MSNBC interview at the very last minute, much to the host’s chagrin.

Now, McGrath will have to face off against two opponents (or three) in an upcoming primary (the other Democratic candidate being a healthcare professional Steve Cox). That could be hard enough on its own. It will be doubly difficult with all the baggage McGrath has tied round her neck in just the first week of campaigning.
