Activists smear Ted Cruz for speaking truth about transgenderism

Is Ted Cruz a vicious transphobic bigot?

That is what the left-wing, hyper-partisan gay and transgender rights organization Human Rights Campaign would have you believe.

HRC has dubbed Cruz’s recent comments concerning the controversial James Younger story as “abhorrent[ly] anti-trans” and “dangerous and disgraceful.” They’ve blasted the Texas senator for his reaction to the disturbing case from his home state of a 7-year-old “transgender” child, James Younger, whose father spoke out amid a custody dispute against the idea of transitioning such a young child. HRC just published a letter, co-signed by 2,000 parents of transgender children, accusing Cruz of “betray[ing] your office, your responsibilities and all sense of decency.”

But was there actually anything that crazy or hateful about what Cruz had to say? It’s worth looking at his actual comments to sort typical left-wing manufactured outrage from actual cause for concern.

Cruz reacted to the story on Twitter, as did many conservative commentators and office-holders. He wrote, “This is horrifying & tragic. For a parent to subject such a young child to life-altering hormone blockers to medically transition their sex is nothing less than child abuse.”

The senator continued, “A 7-year-old child doesn’t have the maturity to make profound decisions like this. The state of Texas should protect this child’s right to choose — as an informed, mature person — and not be used as a pawn in a left-wing political agenda.”

These comments don’t appear transphobic at all to me, if you define transphobia as hatred, bigotry, or bias against transgender people. But HRC and left-wing activists of all stripes basically just define transphobia to mean disagreeing with them on any matter related to gender.

The senator called the situation involving James Younger “horrifying and tragic” because it is.

You have a deeply-confused child of just 7-years-old, encouraged by a mother who seeks to promote the idea that he is transgender, headed down the path toward life-long, irreversible physical changes such as puberty blockers and hormones. And this comes despite the ample evidence showing majorities of gender-confused children eventually grow out of it (and many grow up to be gay, not transgender). Studies show “that a substantial majority [of gender-confused kids] — anywhere from 65% to 94% — eventually ceased to identify as transgender.”

As far as Cruz’s comments that a 7-year-old “doesn’t have the maturity to make profound decisions like this,” well, this is just obviously true. A child of such a young age as seven or 10 or even 12 cannot fully comprehend what biological sex and gender identity are as concepts, let alone understand their own identity well enough to make life-altering decisions.

It might not be “woke” for the senator to say so, but that doesn’t make the truth bigoted.

And whether it constitutes “child abuse” for a parent to do something deeply misguided, at the advice of medical professionals and psychiatric counsel, is certainly debatable. I tend to think Cruz is wrong that it’s “abuse” in that the parents of these children probably have good intentions in most cases. Yet that doesn’t make the senator’s claim somehow vicious or hateful, when he clearly has the child’s best interest at heart.

All in all, this appears to be just another situation where you have left-wing activists throwing around labels and ad-hominems to attack conservatives who dissent. They likely do this because they know they can’t win the debate over transgender seven-year-olds on its actual merits.
