Seven months into his presidency, President Joe Biden is mired in controversy. The ISIS attack at Kabul airport followed the developments of the Taliban regaining control in Afghanistan amid a disorderly American flight. Both have occurred in August. Both have been a disaster for an unprepared, disorganized, and generally out-of-its-depth Biden administration.
Several Republicans have used these events to call for Biden’s resignation. That is a mistake. They should be using these catastrophes to prove the incompetence of Biden and Democrats.
It is little more than political theater to call for a president’s resignation. Realistically, it’s just not going to happen. Each political party likes to call for resignations at the first sign of controversy. Democrats did it constantly with Donald Trump — and if anyone was ever not going to resign, it was him. Republicans are now doing it with Biden. It accomplishes nothing.
Republicans should go on the offensive and use this debacle to persuade the public that Biden is an incompetent president.
Biden and Democrats own the Afghanistan tragedies. In just seven months, their policies have made the United States less secure. This calls for less political theater and greater efforts to sway votes in 2022 and 2024. Democrats started working to take back the House and unseat Trump the day after he was elected in 2016. Congressional midterm elections are a little over a year away. There’s no reason Republicans can’t put a similar offensive into action after the latest events in Afghanistan.
Our country surrendered to a terrorist organization and relinquished the fruits of 20 years’ worth of military sacrifice in less than a week. Terrible mistakes and horrible decisions were made. It is a complete embarrassment, and our country’s allies and enemies noticed. What happened in Afghanistan calls for accountability. Republicans should work diligently to show why Biden and Democrats are bad for the country. Calling for Biden to resign, the political equivalent of a temper tantrum, will not achieve that.
