Idiots accuse Sen. John Cornyn of endorsing Mussolini, because everyone is dumb

Truly, we are in the dumbest timeline.

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, tweeted this weekend: “‘We were the first to assert that the more complicated the forms assumed by civilization, the more restricted the freedom of the individual must become.’ Benito Mussolini.”

It is obvious the Republican senator used the quote as a way to warn that an ever-expanding government is the first step toward fascist rule. It’s as if to say, “Do you want to know how we get to fascism? Here’s a fascist explaining it in his own words.”

But the Internet is crawling with dishonest and stupid people, so now Cornyn is being accused of offering both a tacit and an explicit endorsement of Mussolini. Because of course he is.

“GOP Senator John Cornyn’s Weird Shoutout To Mussolini Backfires Spectacularly,” read HuffPost’s headline.

Raw Story’s headline read, “‘Oooh! Do Hitler next!’: Texas Republican ripped to shreds for heralding Mussolini in Twitter quote.”

“SEN. JOHN CORNYN QUOTES BENITO MUSSOLINI … In Bizarre Tweet,” blared TMZ in a headline that couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be in all caps or not.

This is to say nothing of the members of the media, including the Daily Beast contributor Thor Benson and Rewrite News’ Editor-in-Chief Jodi Jacobson, who likewise claimed on social media that Cornyn had given an approving nod to Mussolini.

Hell, even everyone’s favorite freshman congresswoman, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., got in on the action, tweeting on Feb. 25: “In case you missed it, while the GOP is calling paying a living wage ‘socialism,’ a Republican Senator full-on quoted National Fascist Party leader and Hitler ally Benito Mussolini like it’s a Hallmark card.”

Cornyn’s Twitter account responded eventually to the forced narrative that he had outed himself as a lover of Mussolini, tweeting “Did I over estimate the intelligence of some in the twitter sphere?”

I don’t think it’s an intelligence problem alone, senator. It’s not just that these people are remarkably, perhaps irredeemably, stupid. It’s that they’re also dishonest.
