The Western States Sheriffs’ Association has called on President Joe Biden to replace Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas with someone who will “enforce the rule of law.” But Biden won’t do that because he doesn’t want to enforce immigration law.
The WSSA, which represents sheriffs from 17 states, stated a position of no confidence in Mayorkas. Mayorkas has been a disaster, turning the southern border into a turnstile. Instead of cracking down on illegal border crossings by thousands of people who do not qualify for asylum, he has cracked down on Border Patrol agents whom Democratic operatives and media outlets falsely accused of whipping migrants.

But Mayorkas himself is mostly irrelevant. He is not failing at his job because of corruption or some personal or professional shortcoming. He is failing at his job because that’s what Biden wants. He is faithfully carrying out the policies that Biden wants the Department of Homeland Security to carry out at the border.
Even in the unlikely event that Biden chose to replace Mayorkas, the replacement would be directed to carry out the exact same policies.
Replacing Mayorkas would do nothing but change the avatar for the administration’s immigration failures. Everything the WSSA says in its statement about Mayorkas is correct, but it will be correct about anyone Biden chooses to serve in that role because their statement is an indictment of Biden more so than Mayorkas or anyone else.
There are only two ways the border crisis will be solved in the coming years. Either Biden comes to an epiphany that this is unsustainable (and politically damaging) and reverses his own policies, or, more likely, his administration is voted out of office in November 2024. Getting Mayorkas removed and replaced by another Biden nominee would just be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
