Editorial: To be, or not to be, from Baltimore

Since The Examiner launched in April, we have received hundreds of letters decrying the fact that the Orioles are not the Baltimore Orioles.

Writers have accused Orioles? majority owner Peter Angelos, among other things, of not caring about Baltimore and of planning to move the team to another city. Without commenting on the merit of those accusations, Baltimore may or may not be the best name for the team.

According to Google Trends (www.google.com/trends), people in Towson have searched for “Orioles” more often than anyone over the past two years, followed by those in Owings Mills. Baltimore ranks third. Searchers in York, Pa., are the only ones of the top 10 cities Googling the team not in Maryland.

Taken together, fans outside the city outnumber those in the city. So labeling the Birds as being from Baltimore may not make as much sense as some fans claim.
