Woke school boards and teachers unions lose big in San Francisco recall

If there is anywhere you would think woke school boards and teachers unions could wreak havoc on schools without worrying about consequences, it would probably be San Francisco. The city’s recent recall election would prove you wrong.

San Francisco voters recalled three members of the city’s school board, and the results weren’t even close. All three were recalled by over 70% of voters.

The recall was the result of a school board so out-of-touch with even what liberal parents wanted that it dedicated itself to renaming 44 schools instead of finding a way to return to in-person learning. One of the school board members, Alison Collins, sued the district for $89 million after being replaced as vice president for tweeting racial slurs about Asian Americans. Collins, of course, refused to resign from serving the very district she was suing. The lawsuit was tossed out of court, and voters then tossed her out of her seat, along with Faauuga Moliga and Board President Gabriela Lopez.

SAN FRANCISCO MAYOR BACKS RECALL OF THREE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

Teachers unions rallied to protect the three school board members, but they were outraised 10-to-1. Democratic Mayor London Breed was among the supporters of the recall campaign. The city had moved to sue the school board in February 2021 over its failure to produce a reopening plan.

Accusations of racism and nefarious right-wing political campaigns were always silly when they were being made about Virginia, but they have no foothold here. Nearly 63% of San Francisco voters are Democrats, compared to just under 7% who are Republicans. The recall was backed by Democratic voters, the Democratic mayor, and even noncitizens, whom the city allows to vote in local elections. The voters who were enthusiastic about replacing the school board members backed President Joe Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom, not former President Donald Trump.

San Francisco residents will have to make it clear that this is not some one-time stand if they want the message to stick. So often, heavily Democratic cities replace failed leadership with more of the same. But the message should resonate outside the city. Democrats across the country should take note: If this is how voters in a deep-blue city such as San Francisco respond to woke school boards and the teachers unions who back them, wait until you see how they respond outside liberal enclaves come November.
