Two months ago, President Biden inherited a border secured by the diplomatic agreements his predecessor had brokered. Now, Biden has beckoned a migrant crisis of record proportions.
Thanks to Biden’s reversal of safe-third-country agreements and the “Remain in Mexico” policy secured by Donald Trump, the Border Patrol reports more than 100,000 encounters along the southern border in February, up from 78,442 in January. But unlike past border surges, Biden didn’t incite an onslaught of families swarming the border. Instead, by giving cartels and coyotes the green light to pass through the Northern Triangle and Mexico, his administration is now being met by an extraordinary number of lone adults and unaccompanied minors. To offset overcapacity in the existing HHS facilities for minors, the Biden administration is reappropriating a Dallas convention center into what it calls a “decompression center,” according to the Associated Press.
While Biden’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gives the teachers unions cover to keep tens of millions of children out of the classroom under cover of the coronavirus, his Department of Health and Human Services is subjecting thousands of children to horribly congested, jail-like facilities. White House press secretary Jen Psaki asserts, straight-faced, that we aren’t facing a “kids in cages” crisis. Yet, the opening of a convention center, evocative of the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina, doesn’t exactly imply confidence in Biden’s ability to get the border under control.
And, of course, that’s because Biden created this crisis. He knew that, thanks to existing court rulings created by liberal activists and judges, any presidential administration only has two options when met with minors at ports of entry: Either keep them in HHS facilities separate from adult border facilities (this is thanks to something called “the Flores agreement”), or simply release them into the country with no accountability.
Trump tamped down the own border crisis in his time by stopping the problem at the source. He upset the status-quo-ante at the border, which had encouraged human trafficking and bad-faith asylum applications. Biden reversed that, however, and now, we have a catastrophe of children being brought here by coyotes and abusers.
Just make sure to call the kiddie jails “decompression centers.”
