Nearly two years after a jihadi assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, left four Americans dead, MSNBC host Chris Hayes revived a discredited talking point, suggesting that the attack was instigated by a YouTube video deemed offensive to Islam.

Hayes quoted an article in yesterday’s New York Times exploring the activities of Ahmed Abu Khattala, the suspect captured by U.S. special forces yesterday, in the days and weeks before the 2012 attack. “But Mr. Abu Khattala told other Libyans in private conversations during the night of the attack that he was motivated to attack the diplomatic mission to take revenge for an insult to Islam in an American made online video,” Hayes read during his program Tuesday.
