Save the Obama drama for your grandmama

WHO: The people of Maryland and Washington, D.C.

WHAT: It seems that our usually reasonable citizens have completely lost their heads over the fact that Barack Obama and family have come to town. Restaurants, churches, community groups and ordinary citizens are all competing to get just a few moments of Obama time.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: As much as everyone wants to find hope in troubled times, there’s going to come a time when Obama won’t live up to expectations. Just as children at some point discover their parents are human, so too must Americans realize that the Obamas are human. A little stardust will not rub off on every eatery visited by the family. The coverage of every movement the first family makes is getting completely out of hand — yes, even a media outlet can admit it. We don’t care where the first couple eats on date night. They could decide to frequent McDonald’s for all we care. It’s not important.

BRIGHT BULB Supermajority saves the day
Republican legislators in Annapolis want to require a two-thirds majority vote to increase taxes. This bill is a “structural” way to check spending regardless of who is in power and benefits everyone in the state, regardless of party. Democrats in the state legislature should extend a bipartisan hand — like Barack Obama is doing with Republicans in Washington — and work with their colleagues across the aisle to pass this legislation.

Quote of the day:
“One trip to Iraq does not an expert make.” — Rep. Frank Kratovil, D-1st, who was recently made a member of the House Armed Services Committee, speaking about a recent trip to Iraq.
