Sen. Bob Casey and the myth of the pro-life Democrat

So much is at stake with the nomination of the next Supreme Court justice. Somewhere far down that list is the fate of the enduring fiction that Sen. Bob Casey is at all pro-life.

The Pennsylvania Democrat has carefully fed and curated the myth for more than a decade, and even seasoned newsmen like Jake Tapper have fallen for the ruse. As recently as Monday, the CNN anchor said Casey was “an opponent of abortion rights.” But nothing could be further than the truth. Just ask the NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Casey might call himself a pro-life Democrat but NARAL calls him an ally. That organization has looked at the actions, not the rhetoric, of the senator and awarded him a 100 percent rating. They’re not alone as Politico noted earlier this year:

Casey’s voting record in Congress aligns significantly with abortion rights groups such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He has voted along with Planned Parenthood 75 percent of the time since 2011. And he voted with NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent of the time in 2016 and 2017, although his 2018 rating is sure to be lower.

How did the abortion lobby learn to love Casey? He voted for Obamacare. He supported the contraception mandate. He pushed for Title X funding for Obamacare.

And for years he got away with it. Casey somehow managed to argue that Obamacare, which funded abortion and which mandated coverage of abortifacient morning-after contraceptives, was somehow pro-life.

The senator who voted against Justice Neil Gorsuch last year has pledged to vote against the president’s next nominee. He doesn’t know who Trump will announce. He does know that the next justice could be the deciding vote against Roe v. Wade. By refusing to slip his liberal handlers when it matters most, Casey makes clear that he was never pro-life. Let the myth die.
