Opinion in brief

Bright Bulb.

Growing Qigong. If you thought yoga was fun, try Qigong. This ancient Chinese healing practice is growing in popularity around the country. Now it has come to Baltimore. The Tao Brothers hosted a walk to raise awareness of the practice on Friday to kick off the annual Qigong Association meeting held last weekend in Reisterstown. Qigong focuses on deep breathing and meditation in order to help heal arthritis or hypertension. But before experimenting with it, get the pronunciation down first: chee-gung.

OUTRAGE

  • Metro Muggings
  • Who: Metro Transit Police
  • What: Keep those wallets and purses hidden, at least when riding the D.C. Metro system. Statistics from the transit agency’s midyear crime report show the Metro system’s robberies have jumped by almost 40 percent from last year. There were 272 robberies reported so far this year, up from 197 in that same time period the year before.
  • Why it’s a bad idea: The Metro is way cheaper than taking a cab, but could ultimately end up being more costly. Sightseeing in D.C. won’t be fun when you’re broke.
  • Why they’re doing it: A surge in riders could be providing more opportunities for criminals. But where’s the transit police?
  • Where to vent: Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
