Amy McGrath is probably wasting Democratic donor money on an unwinnable race

Mitch McConnell’s Democratic challenger Amy McGrath raised $2.5 million dollars in the first 24 hours of her campaign. While many liberals are celebrating this impressive feat, conservatives should be grinning. These liberals are almost certainly dumping their money into a hopeless cause.

McConnell, who built his state’s Republican Party from almost nothing, has been a senator for over 30 years. He has remarkable name recognition in the state, and in his 2014 Senate race, McConnell won in a landslide by more than 15 points. The state elected Trump by a 30-point margin in 2016. Trump’s presence on the ticket in 2020 will likely boost McConnell’s totals as well.

Kentucky voters are not going to kick out the Senate majority leader for a Democrat and certainly not for one as out-of-tune with the state as McGrath.

Additionally, “Team Mitch” has raised $11.2 million since for his reelection since 2015, and $3 million in the second quarter of 2019, according to Politico. McConnell is going to have plenty of money, as well as the support of President Trump to help him carry conservative Kentucky. And McGrath, like Beto O’Rourke in 2018, will probably only serve as a cash sink into which early Democratic money flows to no avail.
