How much does your state rely on Obamacare subsidies?

Now that the Supreme Court has upheld Obamacare’s federal subsidies, the 6.4 million people who were in danger of losing their health care tax credits can rest easy. People in 34 states were at risk of losing their subsidies because they signed up for health care on the federally-run healthcare.gov.

Obamacare subsidies on all exchanges are now set in place. Across the nation, some states rely heavily on subsidies, while other states have nearly no one relying on them.

The state most reliant on Obamacare subsidies is Florida. Almost 6.8 percent of its population receives tax credits for health care through Obamacare. For a state as politically important as Florida, Obamacare reform could decide the election in 2016. Then again, the portion of the population receiving subsidies may not include many swing voters.

North Carolina is the state second-most reliant on Obamacare subsidies, with 4.7 percent of its population receiving subsidies.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii has the fewest number of people receiving Obamacare subsidies. Less than four of every 1,000 people in Hawaii receive Obamacare subsidies, or fewer than 5,000 people. Compare that to Florida, where 1.3 million people receive subsidies.

Nationwide, about 8.7 million people receive Obamacare subsidies. But that number is expected to grow in the near future. Projections show the combined amount of Obamacare’s tax credits will eventually equal all other refundable tax credits combined, according to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.
