Today’s outrage: Social disservice

Published November 6, 2008 5:00am ET

WHO: The Baltimore County Department of Social Services

WHAT: The department somehow managed to lose track of thousands of dollars worth of bus tokens and gift cards. They also allowed $1,750 in gift cards to expire and they paid $5,000 in fees for the cards.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Are they kidding? How could they lose track of thousands of dollars worth of our money? Gift cards and bus tokens are exactly the kind of asset that needs to be watched carefully. They are easily misused, and they rarely leave traces of their misuse. There ought to be a database of every single card or token the agency has and how it’s used.

WHERE TO VENT: Call the department’s director at 410-853-3930

Today’s bright bulb: Go Maryland!

No, we’re not talking about the Terrapins, we’re talking about 200 Marylanders pitting themselves against Texans for November’s National Novel Writing Month. Our fellow statesmen aim to write 50,000 words or more in 30 days. This exercise not only stimulates creativity, it encourages people to keep their minds fresh. About 30 NaNoWriMo novels have gone on to publication — hey, you never know. There’s still time to sign up and exercise your literary muscle.

Today’s quote

“I wanted to have children and get out of the priesthood and move on. Everywhere you go with a collar in this society, everybody tattoos you and sees a child molester or a homosexual and it’s very uncomfortable living that way.” — Fernando Cristancho, the former Maryland priest who fathered triplets through in vitro fertilization and subsequently had them removed from his care under allegations of child sex abuse.
