To understand just how skewed the Biden administration’s priorities are, compare its reactions to two recent events.
The first was a disastrous drone strike in Afghanistan, led by the U.S. military, that killed 10 innocent civilians, including seven children. The strike was supposed to be a retaliation against ISIS-K for its attacks on the Kabul airport during the U.S. military withdrawal from the region. But not one person killed in the strike was a member of ISIS-K, nor were any of them a threat to U.S. forces, the Pentagon has since admitted. Indeed, one of the adults killed was a longtime employee of a U.S. humanitarian organization.
This wasn’t just a mistake — it was a war crime. Yet there are no plans to take disciplinary action against anyone involved, Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson revealed last week.
Since Tomlinson’s report, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has reportedly appointed a high-ranking officer to review Central Command’s investigation into the drone strike and consider whether any military disciplinary action is warranted. In other words, the hunt for a scapegoat is on. Considering that U.S. military and White House officials have offered nothing but an emphatic defense of their actions and the intel that informed them, it is unlikely there will be any meaningful consequences for this tragedy.
And that’s because it’s not the kind of tragedy that riles up the Democratic base. There were no reporters there to document the plight of these innocent Afghans. Few people even knew who they were. The Biden administration knows it doesn’t have to care about what happened because no one else in the Democratic Party cares enough to hold them accountable.
The second event of the past week, however, is the exact kind of scandal leftists care about: desperate Haitian migrants supposedly being chased down and “whipped” by Border Patrol agents. The narrative basically constructed itself: federal immigration officers are racist, immigration restrictions are racist, therefore we should get rid of both.
All of it was based on a lie — agents were not “whipping” migrants. They’re not even issued whips. The agents were simply holding their horses’ reins as they tried to steer migrants away from entering the country illegally, spinning the reins to keep migrants from getting too close to the horses.
This is just the sort of superficial, fake controversy that gets the Biden administration’s political sensibilities tingling — the kind that lets Biden look like the good guy instead of the hopelessly incompetent war criminal. Democrats were eager to pile on Border Patrol, and Biden’s staff willingly obliged. The White House publicly condemned the agents on horseback, calling their behavior “horrific,” even though they were just federal workers doing their jobs. Press secretary Jen Psaki also revealed that the Department of Homeland Security had placed the agents on leave pending an investigation — apparently into their equestrian activities.
The double-standard here is staggering. The Biden administration could not be bothered to hold to account officials responsible for literally massacring innocent civilians in Afghanistan, but it was ready to pounce and punish Border Patrol agents, whose only crime was getting caught up in a media-driven faux-outrage cycle.
This tells you everything you need to know about this administration: They don’t care about justice or truth, only about placating irrational rage-filled extremists on Twitter.
