In his longterm push to pass tax reform legislation this year, House Speaker Paul Ryan had taken aim at a clear deadline.
As early as June, the Wisconsin Republican was assuring proponents his “personal goal” was “to get it done before gun deer season.” And he did. For Wisconsinites, opening day of gun season on deer — a tradition as sacred as Packer Sundays — falls on Saturday, Nov. 18, this year. In other words, with the passage of the bill on Thursday, Ryan cut it close but still managed to hit his target.
Just last week at a Washington Examiner event, with only a matter of days to spare, Ryan reaffirmed his commitment to the deadline, claiming the House was “still on track” to pass the bill by opening day.
The Speaker can only hope he’ll have that same accuracy as heads into the woods next week.
