Attempting to turn a page on a brutal anti-Semitism scandal, the British Labour Party on Monday accepted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism.
Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn has been walloped again and again for his own penchant for anti-Semitic viewpoints, and his failure to counter anti-Semitism in Labour’s ranks. Indeed, Corbyn was recently found to have celebrated the lives of Palestinian terrorists. This has caused a revolt from Jewish members of parliament and other activists who believe the party deserves better. Yet Corbyn’s central problem has been that while his far-left base pathologically despises Israel, many British Jews have stated that they cannot see themselves voting for a Labour Party under his leadership.
But while Labour’s acceptance of the IHRA definition is positive, it’s unlikely Corbyn will build on it. After all, as Laura Kuenssberg, the BBC’s chief political correspondent reported on Monday, Corbyn apparently wanted to add a caveat to Labour’s acceptance of the IHRA that “It should not be considered anti-Semitic to describe Israel, its policies or the circumstances around its foundation as racist because of their discriminatory impact, or to support another settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict.”
Think about those words. Because they mean that if Kuenssberg’s reporting is accurate – and she is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest reporters – Corbyn wanted to defend the view that Israel is fundamentally racist. Even under pressure to renounce anti-Semitism, Corbyn can’t hide his hatred of Israel.
Still, from a socialist fanatic who worships the Iranian theocracy, Vladimir Putin’s Russia, press censorship, and hates America, it is not surprising.
