George Floyd protests hijacked for reparations and other pet projects

It was only a matter of time before “Justice for George Floyd” became “And while we’re at it, here are a few other things we’d like you to take care of with no questions asked.”

That’s invariably what happens when the media, Hollywood, and the Democratic Party get involved.

An Oprah Winfrey special on Tuesday featured several of these types, including New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, whose entire career is based on the premise that America is an irredeemably racist country.

“We’re thinking too small,” Hannah-Jones said of the nationwide protests over Floyd’s death. “Because this is really a time where we can expand on Black economic inequality. That’s fundamentally what we need to be addressing.”

What started out as an issue over excessive force used by police against minorities has quickly devolved into a jackpot for the social justice people who see oppression, grievance, and victimhood in every aspect of their lives.

Hannah-Jones then made the ultimate leap.

“We can’t just be talking about policing,” she said. “If we’re going to talk about that, we also need to be trying to put forth an economic agenda that would have to include reparations, because there is no way without actually paying reparations to the descendants of those enslaved, that we can deal with the economic gap that Black people perennially have.”

And with that, Hannah-Jones likely lost the attention of nearly every white person who might have been watching.

Though new polling shows that majorities support the protests and believe that police treat blacks differently, polls have consistently shown for years that the overwhelming majority of white people in the United States are opposed to monetary compensation for the black descendants of slaves.

Hannah-Jones’s attempt to force reparations into the conversation comes after similar moves to turn the Floyd saga into a safety net for other items on their wish list — namely, eliminating the police wholesale and canceling anyone deemed insufficiently deferential to the desires of minorities.

Everyone’s going to suffer now that the media, Hollywood, and Democrats are co-opting the Floyd protests. This is no longer just about policing, but we knew that was coming.
