Texas border sector has 8,000 illegal immigrants in custody, busting capacity by 5,000

The Rio Grande Valley sector of the Texas border is currently in custody of more than 8,000 illegal immigrants, nearly three times the intended capacity of 3,363, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release.

Yet, some people seriously don’t think there’s a border crisis.

The agency announced that alarming figure Monday night as yet another reminder that the little border protection that we have is set to collapse under the weight of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Mexico and Central America dumping themselves into the United States and claiming asylum.

Border Patrol said the Rio Grande Valley sector, where there are more illegal border crossers apprehended than any other sector, is “already stretched thin” but that agents continue detaining illegal immigrants.

The agency said that over the weekend, a group of 130 illegal immigrants were detained, most of which were “family units” and unaccompanied children. This is the asylum sham in action: Everyone south of the border knows that their winning ticket into the U.S. is to arrive on American soil with a child and pretend to be a refugee.

It’s happening on a near-daily basis. In April, agents at the same border sector took custody of a group of 135 illegal immigrants composed entirely of family units and children. The migrants don’t get to the border and dash across in hopes of evading U.S. authorities. They walk over, find an agent to turn themselves in to, and claim asylum. Because there’s no room to keep all of them, and because the immigration court backlog is about 1 million cases deep, the bulk of these people are simply turned loose to stay in the U.S.

This is a tragedy and Democrats in Congress refuse to do anything about it. It’s exactly how they want our immigration system to work.
