As our story points out Wednesday, Republicans believe that President Trump has given them a new lease on life in the Montana Senate race. He’s made it into a personal feud, engaging incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester over his having leaked to the press allegations against White House physician Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former nominee to head the VA.
Some of the gossip that Tester spread was either refuted or could not be substantiated by subsequent investigations.
The NRSC has pounced this morning with this online ad, which it claims is “part of a significant investment.”
You never know just how much play something like this is going to get per unit of hype, but I do agree that Trump might have found an opening for Republicans in this race. A significant investment might ultimately prove worthwhile.
After all, Democrats only have two or at most three Senate pickup opportunities of any sort this year. Tester had seemed impregnable ever since Ryan Zinke was taken out of the running. If Tester falls, there’s no realistic path to Democrats regaining Senate control.
